September is National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month

Did you know:
- Over 23 million children from ages 2-19 are obese or overweight
- Childhood obesity has tripled in the past 30 years
- The financial implications from childhood obesity may pose a threat to the health care system and economy
- Obese children have an 80 percent chance of being obese adults

The U.S. Senate has designated September as National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month. Join Ladybug for Girls and help raise awareness for childhood obesity.

With kids returning to school, it's a wonderful time to introduce (or re-introduce) healthy habits.

Some easy and healthy tips to help your children and yourself move towards a healthier lifestyle are:
- Eat less fast-food meals and eat more healthy home-cooked meals (plus, it's a great way to get the family together each day)
- Eat healthy snacks (fruits, vegetables, whole grains, yogurt, peanut butter, etc.) every day
- Getting your kids to have at least half an hour of indoor or outdoor play each day
- Limit TV and computer time to no more than two hours per day to help everyone stay active

If you have any other tips or feedback feel free to leave a comment!

Toodles,
Jane Marie

Breakfast Program, Awards, & More!

Hello! Jane Marie checking in just for a few updates on behalf of Ladybug for Girls, LLC.

Special thanks to the Atlanta Dream for a great fundraiser and they did an excellent job at their fan appreciation game. Did you miss the game? Check out more pictures of the Atlanta Dream vs. Washington Mystic game on our facebook page. Just follow the link here . While you're there, don't forget to add me as a friend. Thanks!

We've all heard how important it is to start our days off with a healthy and nutritious breakfast and it's true. Getting our students to eat that very important meal helps to improve their grades, memory, and health. Not only that, but students that eat a healthy breakfast show a decrease in behavioral and psychological problems. The School Breakfast to School Wellness Partnership (Action for Healthy Kids and the Kellogg's Corporate Citizenship Fund) are offering 90 schools the opportunity to expand their breakfast prgrams. The goal of this partnership is simple, to increase the amount of students that eat school breakfast on a daily basis. We want you to join teachers, parents, and kids to support breakfast initiatives. Sign the petition here . The deadline is Sept. 3rd.

A big congratulations to children's health crusaders, Dr. David Satcher and his wife, Nola. They will be the first recipients of a national leadership award, the Dr. and Mrs. David Satcher Award for Healthy Kids. The first Get in the Action initiative will launch Sept. 29 in Chicago. The itinerary
includes:
-Building an indoor fitness center with equipment for kids to play and be active
-Modifying a school cafeteria to create an environment where students will want to sit and eat while receiving healthy messages
-Offering parents, children, school staff, and the community the opportunity to see and celebrate all their hard work, taste healthy food, and to play with Mini ReCharge!

Until next time!
